Welcome to the March update.
There’s not a great deal to report this month as our volunteers have been concentrating on our diesel fleet whilst we wait for our turn with the tender on the lifting jacks.
Our funding is hugely dependant on fund raising through the Knights of the Round Table and having working locomotives in traffic at the GCR. The Peak required some repairs and repainting for the 2025 season but which were found to be a bit too much to do before the start of the season. It was decided that turning out the Class 33 would be required. So we concentrated on getting the bodywork repairs completed and the repaint started
Further to our discussions with the Boiler Inspector and our plan of action on the roof stay, work has commenced removing the nuts from the first 4 rows of roof stays. However, the first two rows of stays are different to the other rows we need to replace. Our drawings refer to a modification on a drawing we have not yet been able to locate. Meantime, we have sent a very thin person in to the boiler through the dome to take some pictures of the stays to get a better understanding of how they are fixed to the firebox crown. The search goes on!
The external descaling and painting work on the boiler and firebox is now complete.
In the Machine Shop, work has progressing on machining the valve ports on the valve liners.
If you would like to get involved in the overhaul and join us on a working weekend, please contact us at comms@5305la.org.uk. We are a stage where we can outsource some of the technical work. If you are able to offer us further financial support through donations please go to https://www.sirlamiel.org.uk/monthly-donations/ We also accept donations of railway related items and books to sell in our shed shop and sales stand.. If you would like to get involved without getting too dirty, our sales shop at Loughbough is open during events at the GCR. We’re always looking for people to man the shop and you get to see the loco’s going on and off shed! Please contact us at comms@5305la.org.uk
Thank you for your support for the overhaul of Sir Lamiel.
